This example will show you how to use Citrus to automatically generate correct Bluebook citations to the American Law Institute's Restatements of the Law.

American Law Institute's Restatements of the Law

Begin by starting Microsoft Word 2003, Word 2007, or Word 2010 on a blank document. Then type this sentence:

The estate of a person who dies intestate generally passes according to statute.

Now enter a citation to a legal authority. Whenever you enter a citation, use the F2 key to mark it. For this example, press F2, then the following citation, then F2 again.

F2 Restatement (Third) of Prop.: Donative Transfers 2 (2000). F2

(Later in this example, you will see ways to use abbreviations and shortcuts to enter citations to the American Law Institute's Restatements of the Law much more quickly.)

When you press F2 a second time to indicate the end of a citation, Citrus will add punctuation and section symbols as required by the Bluebook and generate this citation:

The estate of a person who dies intestate generally passes according to statute. Restatement (Third) of Prop.: Wills & Other Donative Transfers § 2 (1999).

Citrus will put the citation into correct form by adding punctuation as necessary; the example above shows the citation after Citrus adds the section symbol (§).  Citrus will also correct content errors, which are more serious.  In the citation above, Citrus uses the full subtitle of "Wills & Other Donative Transfers" rather than abbreviating to "Donative Transfers" and corrects the year of publication from 2000 to 1999.

If you enter a citation but forget to press F2, you can still have Citrus manage the citation. Simply use your mouse or keyboard to highlight the citation, then press F2.  Try entering the following sentence into your document now:

The Statute of Frauds limits the length of an oral lease in some cases. Restatement (Second) of Property § 2.1 cmt. c, illus. 2 (1977).

Highlight "Restatement (Second) of Property § 2.1 cmt. c, illus. 2 (1977)" and press F2.  Citrus will generate the following citation:

The Statute of Frauds limits the length of an oral lease in some cases. Restatement (Second) of Prop.: Landlord & Tenant § 2.1 cmt. c, illus. 2 (1977).

Just as when you use F2 while you are entering a citation, Citrus will correct both syntactic and substantive errors in the highlighted citation.  In the citation above, Citrus will correctly abbreviate "Property" to "Prop." and include the subtitle "Landlord & Tenant."
